#WeAreNewmarket – Community Art Workshops

We are working with local artists Keith Hopewell and Nikki Goldup on an exciting community project called #WeAreNewmarket. They will be making art for empty shops in the High Street, and working with local people to produce a huge new community artwork for display in the museum atrium. This will be a snapshot of life in Newmarket in 2021 and will reflect what the town means to the people who live and work here.
How can I get involved?
Are you a Newmarket resident? What people, places, buildings, plants, homes, history or feelings represent Newmarket to you?
It could be the clock tower, a building you see every day on the way to work or school, the horses crossing over to the gallops every day, the street sign at the top of your road… an object that represents your job… maybe a person, someone who you feel represents your view of Newmarket.
During the drop-in sessions, we will be making individual artworks illustrating your ideas to be included in a huge new piece of art to be displayed in the museum atrium. Using drawing, textiles, writing and collage we will guide you through the artmaking process.
Come and be part of a giant piece of community art creating a snapshot of life in Newmarket in 2021. The drop-in sessions will be open to all ages and abilities, stay for as little or as long as you like and come dressed ready to make art!
You can also make a piece of A5-size art at home and bring it into the museum with your name and contact email on the back (or those of an adult if you’re under 18). Or… you can share your photos of Newmarket people (with their permission) and places on social media using the hashtag #WeAreNewmarket.
When is it happening?
Drop-in sessions are being held on the following dates:
- Wednesday 27 October 2021, 10am – 1pm
- Friday 29 October 2021, 1pm – 4pm
- Saturday 20 November 2021, 10am – 1pm
There’s no need to book – simply meet in the museum atrium next to the shop. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
About the National Horseracing Museum:
The National Horseracing Museum is a 5-acre site in the heart of Newmarket – the long-established home of flat racing.
As an important part of the horseracing industry, we tell the story of horseracing from its earliest origins to the global phenomenon it is today. The museum contains stunning works of art, contemporary sculptures, science and breeding galleries, and some of the world’s most famous racing trophies, unique bronzes and artefacts.
Part of the museum is based in the former sporting palace of King Charles II, built over 350 years ago when the ‘Sport of Kings’ was in its infancy. Using the latest interactive and audio-visual displays, the museum takes a different look at the sport, examining the physical attributes of the elite equine athlete and the importance of the thoroughbred pedigree via our science gallery.
We also re-train retired racehorses in the Rothschild Yard, making NHRM one of the very few places in Newmarket where you can meet retired racehorses. There are daily tours too.
Whilst you’re here, why not make a day of it and book a table for lunch at The Tack Room restaurant, or order a picnic from The Bakery to enjoy in our beautiful grounds.
